L310 – Hurricane Readiness for Inland Communities

Description

In 1972, the remnants of Hurricane Agnes caused catastrophic inland flooding throughout the Mid-Atlantic, making it the costliest tropical cyclone in American history up to that time. Agnes is just one of several tropical systems to cause devastating inland flooding in our region – a list that includes names like Lee, Ivan, Ida, Diane, Eloise, Floyd, just to name a few. This 1-day course is an introduction to the National Weather Service forecast procedures and products dealing with the inland hazards of Hurricanes, Tropical Storms, Depressions, and remnant systems. Topics include hurricane hazards, flood observation, and forecast products, and inland evacuation decision-making processes and tools.

Target Audience

This course is intended for emergency managers and first responders responsible for developing or implementing hurricane and/or inland flooding operations plans and procedures for inland communities.
