Water Rescue Awareness

This 2-hour class meets the Awareness Level requirements of NFPA 1006 Chapters 16, 17, and 22. The textbook is “Water Rescue: Principles and Practice to NFPA 1006 and 1670: Surface, Swiftwater, Dive, Ice, Surf, and Flood”, Second Edition. The same textbook is used for Water Rescue Awareness, Operations, and Technician.

Water Rescue Operations

This 30-hour class meets the Operations Level requirements of NFPA 1006 Chapters 16, 17, and 22. The textbook is “Water Rescue: Principles and Practice to NFPA 1006 and 1670: Surface, Swiftwater, Dive, Ice, Surf, and Flood”, Second Edition. The same textbook is used for Water Rescue Awareness, Operations, and Technician. Prerequisites include: Must pass swim test and Water Rescue Awareness OR WVPST Rescue Core Prerequisites, AND Rope Rescue Level 1 OR Rope Rescue Operations.

This class will start Friday, June 23 at 5:30 pm, beginning with the swim test will be at Pipestem State Park. The classroom portion will be held at Summers County VFD. Instructor is CW Sigman.

PLEASE NOTE: THE SWIM TEST WILL BE HELD AT PIPESTEM STATE PARK, MCKEEVER LODGE ON JUNE 23, 2023 AT 5:30 PM. 

You must be at least 18 years old to attend this class, pass the swim test (details below), and provide a copy of your Rope 1 or Rope Operations certificate.

Swim Test for Public Service Training Water Rescue Training

The swim test consists of:

  • Swimming the length of the pool a number of times (depending on the size of the pool) for a total of 200 yards without touching.
  • Treading water for 15 minutes without a PFD.
  • Push or tow an inert victim wearing appropriate PFD on the surface 50 yards non stop without assistance.
  • Diving down to a depth of 8 to 10 feet, picking up a 5-pound weight, and bringing it up to the side of the pool.
  • While the candidate is treading water, a PFD completely zipped up and buckled up is thrown to the candidate. The candidate has to take it apart, put it on back on, zip everything up, and then get out of the pool.
  • There’s a 10-minute break between each interval
