Sudden Death in Sports: Causes and Collaboration in Response
Course Description: Sudden death during sporting events has been well documented over the past several decades. Damar Hamlin’s sudden cardiac arrest on an NFL field-of-play in January 2023 drew renewed nationwide attention to the possibility of these types of incidents occurring among a young, healthy population. Anytime an incident of this nature occurs at a sporting venue, a coordinated response among sports medicine staff and emergency responders is critical to giving the patient the best chance of survival. This 3 hour virtual instructor led class will look at the most common causes of sudden death in sports, prevention strategies, and emergency planning priorities so that the EMS community care be at the forefront of ensuring safety at athletic venues across the state.
