SUMMARY:Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Athletics: A Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:In early January of this year\, the eyes of the nation watched 
 as Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills collapsed on the field of play in car
 diac arrest\, and the stadium medical team worked to successfully resuscit
 ate him.  We all watched and waited in the days after to see what Damar's
  outcome might be.  For many\, this nationally televised event/incident m
 ay have been their first exposure to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) occurring
  in sports\, but the reality is that SCA in sport can and does occur every
  year.  How often does it occur?  Who is most likely to be impacted?  W
 hat actions can be taken to give a person the greatest chance of survival 
 from such an event?  What medical staffing is typically available at yout
 h sporting events?  How can EMS providers and sports medicine clinicians 
 work to prepare for such an event? What can youth sport leagues/coaches do
  to prepare?  These are just some of the many questions that a situation 
 like this raises.\n\nOn March 1\, 2023\, starting at 6pm\, WVPST Clarksbur
 g will be hosting a panel discussion to address these questions\, and many
  others surrounding SCA in athletics.  This event is for EMS providers\, 
 athletic trainers\, team physicians\, coaches\, parents\, and anyone else 
 with a role or interest in athletics.  Join Brian Potter for a Q&amp\;A s
 ession with a panel of sports medicine subject matter experts consisting o
 f Dr. Jim Kyle\, Dr. Greg Elkins\, Dr. Dan Martin\, and Dr. Samantha Scarn
 eo-Miller.  There will be time for audience questions with the group as w
 ell.\n\nThis event will be held via Microsoft Teams.  To register click h
 ere.\n\nThis has been submitted to the WVOEMS for 2 hours CE credit for WV
  EMS providers.  Certificates will be issued to all participants afterwar
 d\, so athletic trainers may utilize this as Category D CE\, and other hea
 lthcare providers may be able to utilize as CE credit depending on their p
 rofessional credentialing/CE guidelines.
